Kiva is an online platform which facilitates the world’s
first person-to-person microlending. Individuals can learn
about and invest in specific entrepreneurs throughout the
developing world through Kiva and the local microfinance
institutions (MFIs) with which it partners.
In 2007 MAXIMA formed a partnership with Kiva so that Kiva
lenders can invest directly in individual MAXIMA clients.
This relationship is mutually beneficial for both
institutions, as MAXIMA provides on-the-ground facilitation
of loan management for Kiva while Kiva provides MAXIMA with
zero-interest loans. These zero-interest loans provide
MAXIMA with savings which they can then pass along directly
to their clients.
Kiva lenders play an important role in bettering the lives
of individuals and families throughout Cambodia. By making
credit available to MAXIMA’s clients they allow them to use
their natural skills and cultivate their entrepreneurial
sprit, giving them opportunity to start a new business or
expand upon an existing one. Such sustainable access to
credit to individuals who would otherwise lack any access to
financial services allows for those living in rural areas to
achieve social and economic progress not only for their
families but also for their communities.
